Dynamics of fortnightly water level variations along a tide-dominated estuary with negligible river discharge

چکیده
Abstract. Observations indicate that the fortnightly fluctuations in mean amplitude of water level increase upstream direction along lower half a tide-dominated estuary (the Guadiana Estuary), with negligible river discharge, but remain constant upstream. Analytical solutions reproducing semi-diurnal wave propagation shows this pattern results from reflection effects at head. The phase difference between velocity and elevation increases mouth to head (where has standing nature) as timing high low levels come progressively closer slack water. Thus, tidal (flood–ebb) asymmetry discharge is reduced direction. It becomes upper sea remains despite increased friction due shoaling. flat significant portion an suggest character and, thus, propagating Details analytical model show changes depth or length semi-arid estuaries, particular for macrotidal locations, affect tide mass transport inundation regime. This potential impacts on estuarine environment terms ecosystem management.

Tamarix transpiration along a semiarid river has negligible impact on water resources
The proliferation of saltcedar (Tamarix spp.) along regulated rivers in the western United States has transformed riparian plant communities. It is commonly assumed that transpiration by these alien plants has led to large losses of water that would otherwise contribute to streamflow. Control of saltcedar, therefore, has been considered a viable strategy for conserving water and increasing stre...

Flocculation of metals is one of the most important estuarine processes that occur due to the mixing of seawater and river water and colloidal metals undergo this process come in the form of flocculants. Due to the important role of flocculation process in producing suitable food sources for aquatic organisms and reducing the amount of input pollution into aquatic environments, the present stud...

متن کاملContrasting Seasonal and Fortnightly Variations in the Circulation of a Seasonally Inverse Estuary, Elkhorn Slough, California
Three and a half years of hydrographic, velocity, and meteorological observations are used to examine the dynamics of upper Elkhorn Slough, a seasonally inverse, shallow, mesotidal estuary in central California. The long-term observations revealed that residual circulation in Elkhorn Slough is seasonally variable, with classic estuarine circulation in the winter and inverse estuarine circulatio...
